/lopa means "invisibility".

In other words —

When a sUtra replaces anything with /lopa, it becomes invisible.

Examples —

The sUtra halGyAbbhyodIrgh... teaches, "in vidyut विद्युत् + /su, replace /su with /lopa". This means that the /su disappears —

**vidyut- विद्युत् + /su
→ vidyut विद्युत् + (invisible /su)
→ vidyut विद्युत् " s lightning"

The /pANinIya jargon has no word meaning "delete" or "erase". Whenever a sUtra zaps anything, it says "replace it with zero".

However there are different sorts of zero: there is /lopa, /luk, /zlu and /lup.
