Whatever has meaning, has no verb root, and has no affix, is said to be a /prAtipadika (nounbase).

Example:

**azva- अश्वॱ

is a nounbase, because it means 'horse', it contains no verb root, and it contains no affix.

nounbases invariably get some /sup added to them. See **azvas अश्वस् for an example.
