pratyayasya luk;zlu;lupaH

प्रत्ययस्य लुक्श्लुॱलुपः ONPANINI 11061

The affixes /luk /zlu /lup (also disappear).

Example —

**manas- मनस् + /am
manas मनस् + /luk by svamornapuMs...
→ **manas' मनस्ऽ by this rule

Why do we need four different kinds of nothing to erase things?

Because these trigger some additional rules:

(1) replacing an affix with /luk /zlu /lup rolls back the letter changes the affix did to the stem (see nalumatAGg... >>).

(2) /zlu reduplicates its stem (see zlau).

(3) /lup preserves the gender of its stem (see lupiyuktav...).

Why is this rule necessary? If /pANini had made these three consist of only labelletters, they would disappear anyway by tasyalopaH even if this sUtra was absent.

That's dubious (no affixes consist of only labels, no affix has more than two labels), but even if you were right, the sUtra would still be necessary to tell us that these three are affixes and replace affixes.
