sArvadhAtuke yak

सार्वधातुके यक् ONPANINI 31067

Add "yak" (after a root that is) before a (non-doershowing) hard.

dRz दृश् + /yak + objectshowing /laG /ta!**adRzyata अदृश्यत "it was seen"

This debars all /vikaraNa.

Example. In the sentence —

kukkuTiH pacyate mayA कुक्कुटिः पच्यते मया "I am cooking a hen", "the hen is being cooked by me"

...the verb **pacyate पच्यते is formed like this —

pac पच् + objectshowing /laT /ta
pac पच् + /yak + /ta by this rule
→ **pacya- पच्यॱ + /te''' by Tita::Atman...
→ **pacyate पच्यते "is being cooked"

This /yak will also appear before /laG, /loT and hard liG

dRz दृश् + /yak + objectshowing /laG /ta
→ >>> ** adRzyata <<< "it was seen"

zru श्रु + /yak + objectshowing /loT /ta
zru श्रु + /yak + /tAm'''
zrU श्रू + /yak + /tAm''' by akRtsArvadh...
→ **zrUyatAm श्रूयताम् "let it be heard", "I'll tell you", "please listen"

dRz दृश् + objectshowing hard liG /ta
dRz दृश् + /yak + **Ita ईत
!**dRzyeta दृश्येत "would be seen"

See also yak-caused changes.

/yak is soft — why is there no gbS in zrUyatAm श्रूयताम् and dRzyeta दृश्येत?

/yak is /kit, so kGitica debars gbS.

**pacati पचति has /tip, why does **pacyate पच्यते get /ta?

See bhAvakarmaNoH.

Why "hard"?

No /yak appears before the soft tenses — the soft liG, and /liT, that is soft by liTca.

Does this rule apply to tenses only?

It applies also to /zAnac when it is not doershowing, namely, when it replaces a /laT that is not doershowing (see laTazzatRz...). See **pacyamAna- पच्यमानॱ for an example.

Can you show examples with other tenses?

No. The other tenses add affixes like /sya, /tAs, /cli...

These debar the /vikaraNa (/zap etc) when the tense is doershowing, and debar /yak when it isn't —

ghrA घ्रा + objectshowing /luG /AtAm
/aT + ghrA घ्रा + /cli + /AtAm
→ **aghrAsAtAm अघ्रासाताम् "both were smelled"
