Replace ch छ्, z श्,
and vrazc व्रश्च् bhrasj भ्रस्ज् sRj सृज् mRj मृज् yaj यज् rAj राज् bhrAj भ्राज्
with S ष्
when padafinal or before serious.
When non-padafinal before serious —
dRz दृश् + /kta m
→ dRS दृष् + ta त by this rule
→ dRS दृष् + Ta ट by STunASTuH
→ **dRSTa- दृष्टॱ "seen"
prach प्रछ् + /kta
→ pRch पृछ् + /kta by grahijyAvay...
→ pRS पृष् + ta त by this rule
→ pRS पृष् + Ta ट by STunASTuH
→ !**pRSTa- पृष्टॱ "asked"
prach प्रछ् + /tumun → !**praSTum प्रष्टुम्
When the ch छ् z श् is padafinal, the S ष् will turn into D ड् a bit downriver —
viz- विश् + /bhyAm
→ viS- विष् + /bhyAm by this rule
→ !**viDbhyAm विड्भ्याम् by jhalAJjazonte >>>
Therefore padafinal z श् gets crushed into D ड्. This is the general rule for z श्, but some exceptions make k क्, ie. dik दिक् from diz- दिश् + /su, and divispRk दिविस्पृक् from **divispRz- दिविस्पृश् (see kvinpratyayasy...). See also parauvrajeSS... (335).
The seven /cu roots in this sUtra are exceptions to <6 coHkuH, which would have made k क् g ग्, instead of S ष्.
Example with mRj मृज् —
mRj मृज् + /laT /tip
→ mRj मृज् + /tip by adiprabhRt...
→ mArj मार्ज् + /tip by mRjervRddhiH
→ mArSti मार्ष्ति by this rule
→ !**mArSTi मार्ष्टि "wipes out", "cleans", by by STunASTuH
I didn't understand that. I thought that the /asiddha rule says that <6 coHkuH works before this rule, so mRj मृज् should become mRg मृग्, shouldn't it?
Hm, not so. If <6 coHkuH were to make mRj मृज् into mRg मृग्, this rule would never get mRj मृज्, so the mRja मृज word in the sUtra would never catch anything and be utterly useless. This tells us that mRja मृज is an exception to <6 coHkuH. Rule <6 coHkuH doesn't wor AT ALL when this rule does.
The /asiddha rule does not forbid rules from being exceptions to previous rules, it just debars the output of a later rule from being fed to a former rule.
