Replace the start of what comes later.
This is an exception to << alontyasya, which replaces the LAST letter.
Example.
Rule mAdupadhAy... literally tells us that sometimes we must "replace /matup with v व्" when AFTER saras- सरस्.
According to << alontyasya, that should mean "replace THE LAST LETTER OF /matup with v व्".
But according to this rule, that must instead mean "replace THE FIRST LETTER OF /matup with v व्", because the rule says that the replacement happens AFTER something.
Therefore matup मतुप् turns into vatup वतुप्, not into mavup मवुप्, and saras- सरस् + /matup makes **sarasvat- सरस्वत्, not sarasmav-.
Similarly, when the GasiGasozca rule states "replace /Gas with o ओ", it means replace /Gas with os ओस्, not with a::o अओ — so we get **guros गुरोस्, **gos गोस्.
