But according to this rule, we must understand "replace the LAST LETTER OF **mAtR- मातृॱ with AnaG आनङ् before **pitR- पितृॱ".

So we get mAtAn मातान् + pitR पितृ, NOT An आन् + pitR पितृ.

This rule is an exception by anticipation to anekAlzits... >>, which would make An आन् replace the whole of mAtR मातृ.
