The rule that applies to something applies also to what ends in it.
Example 1. When rule acoyat says "add yat यत् after a vowel", it adds yat यत् to all roots ending in vowels, not just to one-vowel roots like i इ.
Example 2. When rule ugidacAMs... says "add /num to an /udit", the nounbase **hanumat- हनुमत् is /udit, because it ends with the affix /matup, which is /udit.
This rule is also known by the nickname of /tadantavidhi "tadanta rule".
