/anuvRtti / अनुवृत्ति

The "/anuvRtti" ("following", "continuation", "inheritance") is the trickling down of words from sUtras to the next sUtras.

Let's look at an English example that I copied shamelessly from learnsanskritdotorg. When three sUtras look like —

43 give a cow to Bill
44 a blanket to John
45 a shovel too

They must be understood to mean:

43 give a cow to Bill
44 (give) a blanket to John
45 (give) a shovel (to John)

Here sUtras 44 and 45 inherit the word "give" from 43, but not "cow", and 45 inherits "to John" from 44, but not "to Bill".

There are a few common sense rules that must be used to understand the abbreviations in the sUtras. As for instance, sutra 44 above inherits "cow" from 43, but it does not inherit "to Bill" because it has "to John". This is called the John's blanket principle.
