When chanting verses or sUtras, an inmemorial tradition forces us to lengthen the final vowel of the sUtra, verse, or mid-verse.
Also, when the last letter is /H, we must add after it a repeat of the previous vowel, and lengthen it.
Also, a pause must be done at mid-verse, with the same sort of lengthenings.
These are NOT /pANini rules. It is just an old custom of how cahnting is taught.
So, if a verse is written as —
gurussAkSAtparabrahmatasmaizrIguravenamaH || गुरुःसाक्षात्परब्रह्मतस्मैश्रीगुरवेनमः ॥
it must actually be sung or chanted as —
guruHsAkSAtparabramhAAA tasmaizrIguravenamaHAAA
You may lengthen those vowels as much as you like. But always the same amount in all verses.
