When a student, using what appears to be sound reasoning, concludes that any piece of any sUtra serves no purpose, the chance that the student's reasoning has holes is well above 90%.

What if no one can find the hole, not even the learned commentarists?

Well, yes, it does. Saying it directly has been sort of a taboo for about two millenia, however.
