@John's blanket principle

This /paribhASA means that when two sUtras go like —

priests get cows ||

John a blanket ||

then John gets no cow, even if John is a priest.

In other words, we must understand /tu "but" in the second sutra in such a situation, and we may not understand /ca "too". When /pANini means that John gets both a cow and a blanket, he invariably adds /ca, like this —

118 priests get cows ||

119 John a blanket too ||

This principle is called in Sanskrit the takraG-kauNDinya-nyAya तक्रंॱकौण्डिन्यॱन्याय ("fable of the buttermilk and kauNDinya कौण्डिन्य". When /pANini says "give curds to the brahmins buttermilk to kauNDinya", our poor brahmin kauNDinya कौण्डिन्य gets no curds. Even though in the /laukika such sentences sometimes mean that John gets both.
