An /avyaktAnukaraNa (onomatopoeia) is whatever word imitates (anukaroti ) an inarticulate (avyakta ) sound.
As for instance. this is the sound a crow makes. It sounds vaguely like kAkAkAk .
Now, if you say —
kAkiti karoti 'it makes "kA kA "',
then that kAk word is an imitation of the inarticulate sound that the crow makes. But if you say
ayaG kAkaH "this is a crow",
then kAkaH is a regular word, not a sound imitation.
