@referent of a noun

The referent of a noun is whatever real thing it means or describes. So here —

sAlaM vipulam utpATya bhrAmayAm Asa vIryavAn |
सालं विपुलमुत्पाट्य भ्रामयामास वीर्यवान्।
"he uprooted a big tree and whirled it around with strength"

the referent of the noun sAlam सालम् "sAl tree" is a certain tree. The referent of the noun vipulam विपुलम् "humongous" is that same tree. So vipulam विपुलम् and sAlam सालम् have the same referent (in grammar jargon: these two words are /samAnAdhikaraNa).
