An action noun is an abstract noun that means an action, such as "a killing".
Some people call these "abstract nouns", but I don't like doing that because "whiteness" is an abstract noun but there ain't much action in it.
In Sanskrit, an action noun, is called a /bhAva ("state", "action").
Examples in English: "a jump" from "to jump", "a drop" from "to drop", and "a read" as in "give it a quick read". Also a jumping, a driving, a dive, an abandoning, an abandonment, a coloring, a staying, a stay.
Examples in Sanskrit —
**pAkas पाकस् "a cooking",
**tyAgas त्यागस् "an abandonment, a renouncement, a throwing away"
**rAgas रागस् "an enjoyment, a pleasure, having a good time".
