@FEOP

FEOP means "For Ease Of Pronunciation".

feop letters are added to grammar things just to make them speakable or easier to understand. They have no particular meaning and does not even deserve the name of labelletter.

Example. The /zivasUtra JamaGaNanam ञमङणनम् just means "the letters J ञ् m म् G ङ् N ण् n न्". So if you were to have that sUtra written in a cheatsheet, JmGNnm ञ्म्ङ्ण्न्म् would be enough to convey its meaning. But no one can chant JmGNnm ञ्म्ङ्ण्न्म्, so we add the five a just feop.

Similarly, the affix /kvip, to work for grammar purposes, only needs the letters k क् v व् and p प्. The i is added just because saying "quip" is easier than saying kvp क्व्प्.

In some cases feop letters are not necessary to make things sayable, but they are added anyway to make sUtras easier to understand. As for instance, sUtra eta::ai uses et एत् to mean "e ". If e had been used to mean e , the sUtra would be aya::ai अय‌ऐ, which would be sort of confusing.
