Descendants from the grandgrandson down are called /yuvan, not /gotra,
if any direct ancestor is alive.
(See **yuvA युवा, **yUnA यूना.)
Exception to < apatyampautr....
So if gargaH गर्गः starts a dinasty,
the son is gArgiH गार्गिः (with /iJ — a putra पुत्र)
the grandson is gArgyaH गार्ग्यः (a /gotra)
the grandgrandson is **gArgyAyaNa- गार्ग्यायणॱ (/yuvan) if any of gargaH गर्गः, gArgiH गार्गिः or gArgyaH गार्ग्यः still lives.
But after they all die, **gArgyAyaNa- गार्ग्यायणॱ becomes gArgyaH गार्ग्यः.
Which is the same thing as saying that /yuvan means "heir to the /gotra title".
The word yuvarAja- युवराजॱ is used in the sense of "heir apparent", which is sorta odd, because a heir apparent is a kind of heir, not a kind of king.
