Expressing circumstance:
bhuJjate yavanAz zayAnAH भुञ्जते यवनाः शयानाः "Greeks eat while lying down"
tiSThanto 'nuzaMsanti gaNakAH तिष्ठन्तो ऽनुशंसन्ति गणकाः "astrologers chant while standing"
vIkSamAno 'cintayat वीक्षमानो ऽचिन्तयत् "he thought while looking around"
Expressing motive or purpose:
adhIyAno vasati अधीयानो वसति "he lives here in order to study" (he came here to study, he's not studying all the time).
Why do we say "of an action"?
You can't use zatR nor /zAnac to show characteristics or circumstances of a THING:
yad utplavate tal laghu यदुत्प्लवते तल्लघु "whatever floats is light"
and not *utplavamAnaM laghu उत्प्लवमानं लघु.
VARTTIKA You can use /zatR or /zAnac to specify who is being talked about —
yo 'dhIyAna:: Aste sa devadattaH यो ऽधीयान आस्ते स देवदत्तः "the one who sits studying is Devadatta", with /zAnac in adhIyAnaH अधीयानः.
