Many sUtras mention the names of other grammarians, such as otogArgyasya "in the opinion of gArgya गार्ग्य after o ओ" and lopazzAkaly... "in the opinion of zAkalya शाकल्य it is deleted". Doing this shows respect to the work of those grammarians. Most of the time the mention of the name shows also that the rule is optional (as in lopazz लोपःश्), but sometimes the rule is compulsory and the mention of the name is only to show respect (as in otogArgyasya).
