A satellite word is a descriptive that has been added to a noun in a "main sentence".
Example. This is a "main sentence" —
zakunim pazyAmi शकुनिं पश्यामि "I see a bird"
Now if we make the nounbase kRSNa- कृष्णॱ "black" describe the zakunim शकुनिम् word in that sentence we get the complex sentence —
kRSNaM zakunim pazyAmi कृष्णं शकुनिं पश्यामि "I see a black bird"
In this complex sentence the word kRSNam कृष्णम् is a satellite of zakunim शकुनिम्. Instead of using one such complex sentence, we might have used two sentences, with no change of meaning —
zakunim pazyAmi | kRSNaz zakuniH
शकुनिं पश्यामि । कृष्णः शकुनिः "I see a bird. The bird is black."
