"Thematic" is an odd word Western grammarians use to describe what is added after verbbases that end in short a अ.

As for instance, **bhava- भवॱ plus **yAt यात् makes **bhavet भवेत्, but **dviS- द्विष् plus **yAt यात् makes **dviSyAt द्विष्यात्. Indian grammarians explain that difference by saying that we add iyt इय्त् after a अ and we add yAt यात् adter non-A आ. Western grammarians explain that by saying that **bhavet भवेत् belongs to the thematic conjugation and **dviSyAt द्विष्यात् to the athematic.
