tRtIyA-samAse

तृतीयाॱसमासे ONPANINI 11030

In the sense of a third-compound, (the /sarvAdi are not pronouns).

This sUtra only applies to the compounds made by pUrvasadRz..., and not to the ones made by kartRkaraN.... Therefore the only pronoun affected is /pUrva-. And /apara- too by a /vArttika.

So when we form a /tatpuruSa from mAsena pUrvaH मासेन पूर्वः "prior by a month", the resulting /tatpuruSa

!**mAsapUrvaH मासपूर्वः "prior by a month"

is not a pronoun, and with /Ge we say

mAsa-pUrvAya मासॱपूर्वाय

even though a lone /pUrva- makes **pUrvasmai पूर्वस्मै.

Why did you pad your translation with "the sense of"?

Because candravasu says that this happens with the uncompounded phrase too —

mAsena purvAya मासेन पुर्वाय

because if pUrvasmin पूर्वस्मिन् were kosher here, the word samAsa समास in the sUtra would be redundant.
