(Optionally,) before non-/savarNa, the /ik shorten.
This shortening debars ikoyaNa इकोयण —
kumArI कुमारी + atra अत्र → kumAri::atra कुमारिअत्र "the girl is here"
vApI वापी + azvazca अश्वश्च → vApi::azvazca वापिअश्वश्च "a lake and a horse"
dadhi दधि + atra अत्र → dadhi::atra दधिअत्र "there is curd here"
kumArI कुमारी + Rzyazca ऋश्यश्च → kumAri::RzyaH कुमारिऋश्यः "a girl and an antelope"
If this option is not taken, ikoyaNaci will apply normally:
kumArI कुमारी + atra अत्र → kumAry atra कुमार्यत्र
vApI वापी + azvazca अश्वश्च → vApyazvazca वाप्यश्वश्च
dadhi दधि + atra अत्र → !**dadhyatra दध्यत्र "there are curds here"
kumArI कुमारी + RzyaH ऋश्यः + /ca → kumAryRzyazca कुमार्यृश्यश्च "a girl and a deer"
Wait, WHY does this sUtra debar ikoyaNaci?
Because otherwise the sUtra would be utterly useless.
In dadhi दधि + atra अत्र there has been no shortening, because i इ is already short. So, how can this sUtra apply?
That's a fault of my translation. The original does not say "shorten the long /ik", it says "replace all /ik with a short". So, in dadhi दधि the short i इ is replaced with itself.
