The receiver is whoever the doer wants to be benefitted or harmed by the action.

Example. In the sentence —

odanam pacati devadatto rAmAya ओदनं पचति देवदत्तो रामाय "D. cooks rice for Raama"

the word **rAmAya रामाय is the receiver, and in —

odanam pacati devadatta:: Atmane ओदनं पचति देवदत्त‌ आत्मने "D. cooks rice for himself"

the word **Atmane आत्मने is the receiver.
