Use /liT for hearsay.
This translates, in practice, to "you may use /liT to mean past time".
Some grammarians say that "hearsay" word here means that the /liT should preferentially be used for tales, stories, legends, and history — nothing that you saw yourself. Others say that it should not be used for anything that happened today (like the /laG).
You may safely ignore that advice, because nowadays no one uses the /liT at all in conversation, old authors used it whenever they felt like, and in literary works authors still use it whenever they want.
Not learning to understand the /liT is a horribly bad idea if you plan to read the epics —

"nIla threw a stone to kumbhakarNa, who nimbly dodged it"
where **cikSepa चिक्षेप is kSip क्षिप् + /liT /tip.
