Why do you translate "before v व् m म्", when the original sUtra says "before /yaJ' letters", that is, before y v r l J m G N n jh bh य्व्र्ल्ञ्म्ङ्ण्न्झ्भ्?

Because I couldn't find any examples of the sUtra applying before y य्, and the other letters never appear at the start of hards.

Why didn't pANini पाणिनि just say mvoH म्वोः instead of yaJi यञि?

So that the next sUtra can inherit the yaJi यञि.
