The /tiG and the /zit verb affixes are hard (/sArvadhAtuka).
So /zap, /zatR, /zAnac are hard, and so are all tenses and their /tiG replacements (except the /liT by liTca >>, and the soft liG by liGAziSi >>>).
Being hard or not affects many rules.
As for instance, by rules kartarizap, adiprabhRt..., juhotyAdibhy... ff , hard tenses, when they mean the doer, make /zap or some other /vikaraNa appear —
nI नी + /laT
→ nI नी + /zap + /laT by kartarizap because /laT is a hard tense
Another example. By sArvadhAtuk..., hard affixes with /pit cause /guNa —
nI नी + /zap + /laT /tip
→ ne ने + /zap + /tip
→ **nayati नयति, with /guNa because /zap is a hard /pit
dviS द्विष् + /laT /tip
→ **dveSTi द्वेष्टि, with guNa because /tip is a hard /pit
dviS द्विष् + /laT /tas
→ **dviSTas द्विष्टस्, with no guNa, because /tas is a hard /apit
See soft.
