bRhadazva said,

03060001a apakrAnte nale rAjan damayantI gataklamA
'O king, after nala had gone away, the beauteous damayantI, now refreshed,

03060001c abudhyata varArohA sanMtrastA vijane vane
timorously awoke in that lonely forest.

03060002a sApazyamAnA bhartAranM duHkhazokasamanvitA
And O mighty monarch, not finding her lord naiSadha, afflicted with grief and pain,

03060002c prAkrozad uccaisH sanMtrastA mahArAjeti naiSadham
she shrieked aloud in fright, saying, 'O lord? O mighty monarch!

03060003a hA nAtha hA mahArAja hA svAmin kiJM jahAsi mAm
O husband, dost thou desert me?

03060003c hA hatAsmi vinaSTAsmi bhItAsmi vijane vane
Oh, I am lost and undone, frightened in this desolate place.

03060004a nanu nAma mahArAja dharmajJasH satyavAg asi
O illustrious prince, thou art truthful in speech, and conversant with morality.

03060004c katham uktvA tathAsatyaM suptAm utsRjya mAGM gataH
How hast thou then, having pledged thy word, deserted me asleep in the woods?

03060005a katham utsRjya gantAsi vazyAmM bhAryAm anuvratAm
Oh, why hast thou deserted thy accomplished wife, ever devoted to thee,

03060005c vizeSato 'napakRte pareNApakRte sati
particularly one that hath not wronged thee, though wronged thou hast been by others?

03060006a zakSyase tA girasH satyAH kartuM mayi narezvara
O king of men, it behoveth thee to act faithfull, according to those words

03060006c yAs tvayA lokapAlAnAM sanMnidhau kathitAH purA
thou hadst spoken unto me before in the presence of the guardians of the worlds.

03060007a paryAptaH parihAso 'yam etAvAn puruSarSabha
O bull among men, that thy wife liveth even a moment after thy desertion of her, is only because mortals are decreed to die at the appointed time.

03060007c bhItAham asmi durdharSa darzayAtmAnam Izvara
O bull among men, enough of this joke! O irrepressible one, I am terribly frightened. O lord, show thyself.

03060008a dRzyase dRzyase rAjann eSa tiSThasi naiSadha
I see thee! I see thee, o king! Thou art seen, O naiSadha,

03060008c AvArya gulmair AtmAnaGM kimM mAnM na pratibhASase
hiding thyself behind those shrubs, why dost thou not reply unto me?

03060009a nRzaMsamM bata rAjendra yan mAm evaGMgatAm iha
It is cruel of thee, O great king, that seeing me in this plight

03060009c vilapantIM samAliGgya nAzvAsayasi pArthiva
and so lamenting, thou dost not, O king, approach and comfort me.

03060010a na zocAmy aham AtmAnanM na cAnyad api kiJM cana
I grieve not for myself, nor for anything else.

03060010c kathanM nu bhavitAsy eka iti tvAnM nRpa zocimi
I only grieve to think how thou wilt pass thy days alone, O king.

03060011a kathanM nu rAjaMs tRSitaH kSudhitaH zramakarzitaH
In the evening oppressed with hunger and thirst and fatigue,

03060011c sAyAhne vRkSamUleSu mAm apazyan bhaviSyasi
underneath the trees, how wilt it take with thee when thou seest me not?'

03060012a tatasH sA tIvrazokArtA pradIpteva ca manyunA
And then damayantI, afflicted with anguish and burning with grief,

03060012c itaz cetaz ca rudatI paryadhAvata duHkhitA
began to rush hither and thither, weeping in woe.
