afflicted as he was with maddening lust and forgetting all sense of propriety --

04014002a yathA kaikeyi sairandhryA sameyAnM tad vidhIyatAm
'Do thou, kekaya's daughter, so act that thy maid may come into my arms.

04014002b yenopAyena sairandhrI bhajen mAGM gajagAminI
A means by which your maid, that has the gait of an elephant, may accept me,

04014002c taM sudeSNe parIpsasva mAhamM prANAn prahAsiSam
sis, find it for me. So that I don't die.

'vaizaMpAyana continued,

04014003a tasya sA bahuzazH zrutvA vAcaM vilapatas tadA
'Hearing his profuse lamentations,

04014003c virATamahiSI devI kRpAJM cakre manasvinI
that gentle lady, the intelligent queen of virATa, was touched with pity.

04014004a svam artham abhisanMdhAya tasyArtham anucintya ca
And having taken counsel with her own self and reflected on kIcaka's purpose

04014004c udvegaJM caiva kRSNAyAsH sudeSNA sUtam abravIt
and on the anxiety of kRSNA, sudeSNA addressed the sUta's son in these words,

04014005a parviNInM tvaM samuddizya surAm annaJM ca kAraya
'Do thou, on the occasion of some festival, procure viands and wines for me.

04014005c tatrainAmM preSayiSyAmi surAhArInM tavAntikam
I shall then send my Sairindhri to thee on the pretence of bringing wine.

04014006a tatra samMpreSitAm enAM vijane niravagrahAm
And when she will repair thither do thou in solitude, free from interruption,

04014006c sAntvayethA yathAkAmaM sAntvyamAnA ramed yadi
humour her as thou likest. Thus soothed, she may incline her mind to thee.'

04014007a kIcakas tu gRhaGM gatvA bhaginyA vacanAt tadA

04014007c surAm AhArayAmAsa rAjArhAM suparisrutAm
'vaizaMpAyana continued, 'Thus addressed, he went out of his sister's apartments. And he soon procured wine well-filtered and worthy of a king.

04014008c kArayAmAsa kuzalair annapAnaM suzobhanam
And employing skilled cooks, he prepared many and various kinds of choice viands and delicious drinks and many and various kinds of meat of different degrees of excellence.

And when all this had been done, that gentle lady sudeSNA, as previously counselled by kIcaka,

desired her Sairindhri to repair to kIcaka's abode,

04014010a uttiSTha gaccha sairandhri kIcakasya nivezanam
'Get up, O Sairindhri and repair to kIcaka's abode

04014010c pAnam Anaya kalyANi pipAsA mAmM prabAdhate
bring wine, for, O beauteous lady, I am afflicted with thirst.'

Thereupon the Sairindhri replied,

04014011a na gaccheyam ahanM tasya rAjaputri nivezanam

04014011c tvam eva rAjJi jAnAsi yathA sa nirapatrapaH

04014012a na cAham anavadyAGgi tava vezmani bhAmini

04014012c kAmavRttA bhaviSyAmi patInAM vyabhicAriNI

04014013a tvaJM caiva devi jAnAsi yathA sa samayaH kRtaH

04014013c pravizantyA mayA pUrvanM tava vezmani bhAmini

04014014a kIcakaz ca sukezAnte mUDho madanadarpitaH

04014014c so 'vamaMsyati mAnM dRSTvA na yAsye tatra zobhane

04014015a santi bahvyas tava preSyA rAjaputri vazAnugAH

04014015c anyAmM preSaya bhadranM te sa hi mAm avamaMsyate

04014016 sudeSNovAca

04014016a naiva tvAJM jAtu hiMsyAt sa itasH samMpreSitAmM mayA

04014017a ity asyAH pradadau kAMsyaM sapidhAnaM hiraNmayam

04014017c sA zaGkamAnA rudatI daivaM zaraNam IyuSI

04014017e prAtiSThata surAhArI kIcakasya nivezanam
And filled with apprehension, and weeping, draupadI mentally prayed for the protection of the gods, and set out for kIcaka's abode for fetching wine.

04014018a yathAham anyamM pANDubhyo nAbhijAnAmi kaJM cana

04014018c tena satyena mAmM prAptAGM kIcako mA vaze kRthAH
And she said, 'As I do not know another person save my husbands, by virtue of that Truth let kIcaka not be able to overpower me although I may approach his presence.'

04014019 vaizamMpAyana uvAca

04014019a upAtiSThata sA sUryamM muhUrtam abalA tataH
'vaizaMpAyana continued, 'And that helpless damsel then adored sUrya for a moment.

04014019c sa tasyAs tanumadhyAyAsH sarvaM sUryo 'vabuddhavAn
And sUrya, having considered all that she urged,

04014020a antarhitanM tatas tasyA rakSo rakSArtham Adizat
commanded a rAkSasa to protect her invisibly.

04014020c tac cainAnM nAjahAt tatra sarvAvasthAsv aninditAm
And from that time the rAkSasa began to attend upon that blameless lady under any circumstances.

04014021a tAmM mRgIm iva vitrastAnM dRSTvA kRSNAM samIpagAm
And beholding kRSNA in his presence like a frightened doe,

04014021c udatiSThan mudA sUto nAvaM labdhveva pAragaH
the sUta rose up from his seat, and felt the joy that is felt by a person wishing to cross to the other shore, when he obtains a boat.''
