Replace only the last letter.
We might as well translate this sUtra as —
When a sUtra says "replace X (with one letter or no letters)", it means "replace the last letter of X with that letter".
Example. Rule idgoNyAH tells us that after paJca पञ्च we must "replace goNI गोणी with i इ". But that's just short for "replace the LAST LETTER OF goNI गोणी with i इ". So we get **paJcagoNi- पञ्चगोणिॱ (not paJce- पञ्चेॱ).
Similarly, when rule nityaGkaroteH seems to be saying "replace kuru कुरु with nothing before /mas", that means "replace THE LAST LETTER OF kuru कुरु with nothing before /mas", so we get **kurmas कुर्मस् (not maH मः).
What when a rule replaces something with two or more letters?
Then it replaces all of the original. See anekAlzits... >>> for examples.
Can two or more letters be replaced with a single letter?
Yes, when it has /zit. See anekAlzits... >>>.
Can several letters replace only the last letter?
Yes, when they have /Git. See Gicca >.
