/upasarga-less /jJA (gets bent endings when action benefits doer).

**gAm गाम् **jAnIte जानीते "he / she recognises the cow to be his / her own"

But when one recognises the cow to be somepne elses's, the ending is flat —

**devadattasya देवदत्तस्य **gAm गाम् **jAnAti जानाति "he / she recognises the cow to be devadatta देवदत्त's"

And with an upasarga, /jJA never gets bent endings -

svargaM lokan na prajAnAti muDhaH स्वर्गं लोकं न प्रजानाति मुढः
