The /adAdi root /as has the present /asti "there is". (Not same as root /as', present /asyati "throws").
/as "be there" + /laT /tip → !**asti अस्ति "there is"
This root is called /asti in some sUtras, such as astisicopRkte, so as to avoid confusion with /asyati.
udyAne sarpo 'sti उद्याने सर्पो ऽस्ति "there is a snake in the garden"
caitrasya gaur asti चैत्रस्य गौरस्ति "of Caitra there is a cow", "caitra चैत्र has a cow"
AsId rAjA nalo nAma आसीद्राजा नलो नाम "(Once upon a time,) there was a king, Nala by name"
This verb is often omitted —
udyAne sarpaH उद्याने सर्पः "there is a snake in the garden"
