/guNa and /vRddhi replace the /ik only.

In other words: if a sUtra says "replace this with /guNa" or "replace that with /vRddhi", it will replace the /ik only, unless otherwise specified.

Example. Rule AdguNaH says "replace with /guNa after a अ A आ". But it does not say WHAT letters have to be replaced. Because of this rule, however, the consonants, and the vowels that are not /ik (namely a अ, A आ and /ec) will not be replaced with /guNa.

But this rule will not apply if the rule does say what sort of letters it replaces. So when vRddhireci says "replace the /ec with /vRddhi", the /ec are replaced, not the /ik.
