The word jAti- जातिॱ means "genus". That's a species (a kind of animal or of superhuman being), or a group of humans related by blood, by place of residence or by any common qualities.
Examples of /jAti words: "crow", "goat", "brahmin", "bengali", "Jew", "Swede", "alien (as in the E.T. movie)".
Sanskrit examples: aja- अजॱ, vRka- वृकॱ, brAhmaNa- ब्राह्मणॱ, deva- देवॱ.
Possible translations of /jAti : "genus", "kind", "ilk", "lineage", "species", "race", "caste", "a people, nation", "ethnic group", /gotra, etc. etc.
The /jAti words are mentioned in many sUtras. As for instance, jAterastrIv... teaches that they get /GIS when f — **devI- देवीॱ, **brAhmaNI- ब्राह्मणीॱ, **vRkI- वृकीॱ, **rAkSasI- राक्षसीॱ. ( **ajA- अजाॱ has /TAp by the exception ajAdyataSTAp.)
The base deva- देवॱ is still a /jAti when it means "his majesty". So "her majesty" is **devI- देवीॱ.
