When a sUtra has two lists of the same length, understand "respectively".

Example. Rule ecoyavAyAvaH says —

"replace e o ai au with ay अय् av अव् Ay आय् Av आव्",

As both lists have four elements, according to this rule, that rule must mean —

"replace e with ay अय्,
o with av अव्,
ai with Ay आय्,
and au with Av आव्".

even though the first list is expressed with one word, "/ec".

More examples: TAGasiGas..., coHkuH.

What if they don't have the same length?

When the lengths are different, as in jhalAJjazonte, this sUtra does not apply and sthAnentarat... is the matchmaker.
