shoot and cut off the bird's head, as soon as I give the order.

I shall give each of you a turn, one by one, my children.'

'vaizaMpAyana continued,

01123049a tato yudhiSThiramM pUrvam uvAcAGgirasAM varaH
'Then droNa, that foremost of all Angira's sons first addressed yudhiSThira saying,

01123049c sanMdhatsva bANanM durdharSa madvAkyAnte vimuJca ca
'O irrepressible one, aim with thy arrow and shoot as soon as I give the order.

01123050a tato yudhiSThiraH pUrvaM dhanur gRhya mahAravam
yudhiSThira took up the bow first,

01123050c tasthau bhAsaM samuddizya guruvAkyapracoditaH
as desired, O king, by his preceptor, and stood aiming at the bird.

01123051a tato vitatadhanvAnanM droNas taGM kurunandanam
Then, droNa, addressing the kuru prince standing with bow in hand,

01123051c sa muhUrtAd uvAcedaM vacanamM bharatarSabha
after a moment, said, O bull of bharata's race --

01123052a pazyasy enanM drumAgrasthamM bhAsanM naravarAtmaja
'Do you see, O prince, that bird on top of the tree?'

01123052c pazyAmIty evam AcAryamM pratyuvAca yudhiSThiraH
yudhiSThira replied unto his preceptor, saying, 'I do.'

01123053a sa muhUrtAd iva punar droNas tamM pratyabhASata
But the next instant droNa again asked him, 'What dost thou see now, O prince?

01123053c atha vRkSam imamM mAM vA bhrAtRRn vApi prapazyasi
Seest thou the tree, myself or thy brothers?'

01123054a tam uvAca sa kaunteyaH pazyAmy enaM vanaspatim
yudhiSThira answered, 'I see the tree,

01123054c bhavantaJM ca tathA bhrAtRRn bhAsaJM ceti punaH punaH
myself, my brothers, and the bird.
droNa repeated his question, but was answered as often in the same words.

01123055a tam uvAcApasarpeti droNo 'prItamanA iva
droNa then, vexed with yudhiSThira, reproachingly said, 'Stand thou apart.

01123055c naitac chakyanM tvayA veddhuM lakSyam ity eva kutsayan
It is not for thee to strike the aim.'

01123056a tato duryodhanAdIMs tAn dhArtarASTrAn mahAyazAH
Then droNa repeated the experiment with duryodhana and the other sons of dhRtarASTra,

01123056c tenaiva kramayogena jijJAsuH paryapRcchata
one after another,

01123057a anyAMz ca ziSyAn bhImAdIn rAjJaz caivAnyadezajAn
as also with his other pupils, bhIma and the rest, including the princes that had come unto him from other lands.

01123057c tathA ca sarve sarvanM tat pazyAma iti kutsitAH
But the answer in every case was the same as yudhiSThira's viz., 'We behold the tree, thyself, our fellow-pupils, and the bird.'
And reproached by their preceptor, they were all ordered, one after another, to stand apart.''

01123058a tato dhanaJMjayanM droNasH smayamAno 'bhyabhASata
'vaizaMpAyana said, 'When everyone had failed, droNa smilingly called arjuna and said unto him,

01123058c tvayedAnImM prahartavyam etal lakSyanM nizamyatAm
'By thee the aim must be shot; therefore, turn thy eyes to it.

01123059a madvAkyasamakAlanM te moktavyo 'tra bhavec charaH
Thou must let fly the arrow as soon as I give the order.

01123059c vitatya kArmukamM putra tiSTha tAvan muhUrtakam
Therefore, O son, stand here with bow and arrow for an instant.'

01123060a evam uktasH savyasAcI maNDalIkRtakArmukaH

01123060c tasthau lakSyaM samuddizya guruvAkyapracoditaH
Thus addressed, arjuna stood aiming at the bird as desired by his preceptor, with his bow bent.

01123061a muhUrtAd iva tanM droNas tathaiva samabhASata
An instant after droNa asked him as in the case of others,

01123061c pazyasy enaM sthitamM bhAsanM drumamM mAm api vety uta
'Seest thou, O arjuna, the bird there, the tree, and myself?'

01123062a pazyAmy enamM bhAsam iti droNamM pArtho 'bhyabhASata
arjuna replied, 'I see that bird,

01123062c na tu vRkSamM bhavantaM vA pazyAmIti ca bhArata
but I don't see the tree, or thyself.'

01123063a tataH prItamanA droNo muhUrtAd iva taM punaH

01123063c pratyabhASata durdharSaH pANDavAnAM ratharSabham
Then the irrepressible droNa, well-pleased with arjuna, the instant after, again said unto that mighty car-warrior amongst the pANDavas,

01123064a bhAsamM pazyasi yady enanM tathA brUhi punar vacaH
'If thou seest the vulture, then describe it to me.'

01123064c ziraH pazyAmi bhAsasya na gAtram iti so 'bravIt
arjuna said, I see only the head of the vulture, not its body.'

01123065a arjunenaivam uktas tu droNo hRSTatanUruhaH
At these words of arjuna, the hair (on droNa's body) stood on end from delight.

01123065c muJcasvety abravIt pArthaM sa mumocAvicArayan
He then said to pArtha, 'Shoot.' And the latter instantly let fly (his arrow)

01123066a tatas tasya nagasthasya kSureNa nizitena ha
and with his sharp shaft

01123066c zira utkRtya tarasA pAtayAmAsa pANDavaH
speedily struck off the head of the vulture on the tree and brought it down to the ground.

01123067a tasmin karmaNi saMsiddhe paryazvajata phalgunam
No sooner was the deed done than droNa clasped Phalguna to his bosom

01123067c mene ca drupadaM saGMkhye sAnubandhamM parAjitam
and thought that drupada with his friends had already been vanquished in fight.
