'Roused from sleep, those tigers among men, with their mother, beholding the extraordinary beauty of hiDimbA,

01142001c vismitAH puruSavyAghrA babhUvuH pRthayA saha
were filled with wonder.

01142002a tataH kuntI samIkSyainAM vismitA rUpasaMpadA
And kuntI, gazing at her with wonder at her beauty,

01142002c uvAca madhuraM vAkyaM sAntvapUrvam idaM zanaiH
addressed her sweetly and gave her every assurance.

01142003a kasya tvaM suragarbhAbhe kA cAsi varavarNini
She asked, 'O thou of the splendour of a daughter of the celestials, whose art thou and who art thou? O thou of the fairest complexion,

01142003c kena kAryeNa suzroNi kutaz cAgamananM tava
on what business hast thou come hither and whence hast thou come?

01142004a yadi vAsya vanasyAsi devatA yadi vApsarAH
If thou art the deity of these woods or an apsaras,

01142004c AcakSva mama tat sarvaGM kimarthaJM ceha tiSThasi
tell me all regarding thyself and also why thou stayest here?'

Thereupon hiDimbA replied,

01142005a yad etat pazyasi vananM nIlameghanibhamM mahat
'This extensive forest that thou seest, of the hue of blue cloud,

01142005c nivAso rAkSasasyaitad dhiDimbasya mamaiva ca
is the abode of a rAkSasa of the name of hiDimba.

01142006a tasya mAM rAkSasendrasya bhaginIM viddhi bhAmini
O handsome lady, know me as the sister of that chief of the rAkSasa.

01142006c bhrAtrA samMpreSitAm Arye tvAM saputrAJM jighAMsatA
Revered dame, I had been sent by that brother of mine to kill thee with all thy children.

01142007a krUrabuddher ahanM tasya vacanAd AgatA iha
But on arriving here at the command of that cruel brother of mine,

01142007c adrAkSaM hemavarNAbhanM tava putramM mahaujasam
I beheld thy mighty son.

01142008a tato 'haM sarvabhUtAnAmM bhAve vicaratA zubhe
Then, by the deity of love who pervadeth the nature of every being, O blessed lady,

01142008c coditA tava putrasya manmathena vazAnugA
I was brought under the control of thy son,

01142009a tato vRto mayA bhartA tava putro mahAbalaH
and I then (mentally) chose that mighty son of thine as my husband.

01142009c apanetuJM ca yatito na caiva zakito mayA
I tried my best to convey you hence, but I could not (because of thy son's opposition).

01142010a cirAyamANAmM mAJM jJAtvA tatasH sa puruSAdakaH
Then the cannibal, seeing my delay,

01142010c svayam evAgato hantum imAn sarvAMs tavAtmajAn
came hither to kill all these thy children.

01142011a sa tena mama kAntena tava putreNa dhImatA
But by that mighty and intelligent son of thine--my beloved,

01142011c balAd ito viniSpiSya vyapakRSTo mahAtmanA
he hath been dragged hence with force.

01142012a vikarSantau mahAvegau garjamAnau parasparam

01142012c pazyadhvaM yudhi vikrAntAv etau tau nararAkSasau
Behold y'all now that couple--man and Rakshasa--both endued with great strength and prowess, engaged in combat, grinding each other and filling the whole region with their shouts.'

'vaizaMpAyana continued,

01142013a tasyAzH zrutvaiva vacanam utpapAta yudhiSThiraH
'Hearing those words of hers, yudhiSThira suddenly rose up

01142013c arjuno nakulaz caiva sahadevaz ca vIryavAn
and arjuna also and nakula and sahadeva of great energy

01142014a tau te dadRzur Asaktau vikarSantau parasparam
and they beheld bhIma and the rAkSasa already engaged in fight, eager to overcome each other

01142014c kAGkSamANau jayaJM caiva siMhAv iva raNotkaTau
and dragging each other with great force, like two lions endued with great might.

01142015a tAv anyonyaM samAzliSya vikarSantau parasparam

01142015c dAvAgnidhUmasadRzaJM cakratuH pArthivaM rajaH
The dust raised by their feet in consequence of that encounter looked like the smoke of a forest-conflagration.

01142016a vasudhAreNusaMvItau vasudhAdharasanMnibhau

01142016c vibhrAjetAM yathA zailau nIhAreNAbhisaMvRtau
Covered with that dust their huge bodies resembled two tall cliffs enveloped in mist.

01142017a rAkSasena tathA bhImaGM klizyamAnanM nirIkSya tu

01142017c uvAcedaM vacaH pArthaH prahasaJ zanakair iva
Then arjuna, beholding bhIma rather oppressed in the fight by the rAkSasa, slowly, said with smiles on his lips,

01142018a bhIma mA bhair mahAbAho na tvAmM budhyAmahe vayam
'Fear not, O bhIma of mighty arms!
We (had been asleep and therefore) knew not that thou

01142018c sametamM bhImarUpeNa prasuptAzH zramakarzitAH
wast engaged with a terrible rAkSasa and tired in fight.

01142019a sAhAyye 'smi sthitaH pArtha yodhayiSyAmi rAkSasam
Here do I stand to help thee, let me slay the rAkSasa,

01142019c nakulasH sahadevaz ca mAtaraGM gopayiSyataH
and let nakula and sahadeva protect our mother.'

01142020 bhIma uvAca

01142020a udAsIno nirIkSasva na kAryasH samMbhramas tvayA

01142020c na jAtv ayamM punar jIven madbAhvantaram AgataH
Hearing him, bhIma said, 'Look on this encounter, O brother, like a stranger. Fear not for the result. Having come within the reach of my arms, he shall not escape with life.'

01142021 arjuna uvAca

01142021a kim anena ciramM bhIma jIvatA pAparakSasA
Then arjuna said, 'What need, O bhIma, for keeping the rAkSasa alive so long?

01142021c gantavyanM na ciraM sthAtum iha zakyam arinMdama
O oppressor of enemies, we are to go hence, and cannot stay here longer.

01142022a purA saMrajyate prAcI purA sanMdhyA pravartate
The east is reddening, the morning twilight is about to set in.

01142022c raudre muhUrte rakSAMsi prabalAni bhavanti ca
The rAkSasa became stronger by break of day,

01142023a tvarasva bhIma mA krIDa jahi rakSo vibhISaNam
therefore, hasten, O bhIma! Play not (with thy victim), but slay the terrible rAkSasa soon.

01142023c purA vikurute mAyAmM bhujayosH sAram arpaya
During the two twilights rAkSasas always put forth their powers of deception. Use all the strength of thy arms.

01142024 vaizamMpAyana uvAca

01142024a arjunenaivam uktas tu bhImo bhImasya rakSasaH

01142024c utkSipyAbhrAmayad dehanM tUrNaGM guNazatAdhikam
'vaizaMpAyana continued, 'At this speech of arjuna, bhIma blazing up with anger, summoned the might that Vayu (his father) puts forth at the time of the universal dissolution. And filled with rage, he quickly raised high in the air the rAkSasa's body, blue as the clouds of heaven, and whirled it a hundred times.

Then addressing the cannibal, bhIma said,

01142025a vRthAmAMsair vRthA puSTo vRthA vRddho vRthAmatiH
'O rAkSasa, thy intelligence was given thee in vain, and in vain hast thou grown and thriven on unsanctified flesh.

01142025c vRthAmaraNam arhas tvaM vRthAdya na bhaviSyasi
Thou deservest, therefore, an unholy death and I shall reduce thee today to nothing.
I shall make this forest blessed today, like one without prickly plants. And, O rAkSasa, thou shalt no longer slay human beings for thy food.'

01142026 arjuna uvAca

01142026a atha vA manyase bhAranM tvam imaM rAkSasaM yudhi
arjuna at this juncture, said, 'O bhIma, if thou thinkest it a hard task for thee to overcome this rAkSasa in combat,

01142026c karomi tava sAhAyyaM zIghram eva nihanyatAm
let me render thee help, else, slay him thyself without loss of time.

01142027a atha vApy aham evainaM haniSyAmi vRkodara
Or, O vRkodara, let me alone slay the rAkSasa.

01142027c kRtakarmA parizrAntasH sAdhu tAvad upArama
Thou art tired, and hast almost finished the affair. Well dost thou deserve rest.'

01142028 vaizamMpAyana uvAca
'vaizaMpAyana continued,

01142028a tasya tad vacanaM zrutvA bhImaseno 'tyamarSaNaH
'Hearing these words of arjuna, bhIma was fired with rage

01142028c niSpiSyainamM balAd bhUmau pazumAram amArayat
and dashing the rAkSasa on the ground with all his might slew him as if he were an animal.

01142029a sa mAryamANo bhImena nanAda vipulaM svanam
The rAkSasa, while dying, sent forth a terrible yell

01142029c pUrayaMs tad vanaM sarvaJM jalArdra iva dundubhiH
that filled the whole forest, and was deep as the sound of a wet drum.

Then the mighty bhIma, holding the body with his hands,

Beholding hiDimba slain, they became exceedingly glad

and lost no time in offering their congratulations to bhIma, that chastiser of all foes.

01142032a abhipUjya mahAtmAnamM bhImamM bhImaparAkramam
Then arjuna worshipping the illustrious bhIma of terrible prowess,

01142032c punar evArjuno vAkyam uvAcedaM vRkodaram
addressed him again and said,

01142033a na dUre nagaramM manye vanAd asmAd ahamM prabho
'Revered senior, I think there is a town not far off from this forest,

01142033c zIghraGM gacchAma bhadranM te na no vidyAt suyodhanaH
blest be thou, let us go hence soon, so that duryodhana may not trace us.'

01142034a tatasH sarve tathety uktvA saha mAtrA paranMtapAH
'Then all those mighty car-warriors, those tigers among men, saying, 'So be it,' proceeded along with their mother,

01142034c prayayuH puruSavyAghrA hiDimbA caiva rAkSasI
followed by hiDimbA, the rAkSasa woman.''
