03073001 bRhadazva uvAca
'bRhadazva said,

03073001a damayantI tu tac chrutvA bhRzaM zokaparAyaNA
'Hearing everything, Damayanti became oppressed with grief,

03073001c zaGkamAnA nalanM taM vai kezinIm idam abravIt
and suspecting the person to be nala, said unto kezinI,

03073002a gaccha kezini bhUyas tvamM parIkSAGM kuru bAhuke
'O kezinI, go thou again, and examine bAhuka,

03073002c abruvANA samIpasthA caritAny asya lakSaya
and staying in silence at his side mark thou his conduct.

03073003a yadA ca kiJM cit kuryAt sa kAraNanM tatra bhAmini
And, O beauteous one, whenever he happens to do anything skilful,

03073003c tatra saJMceSTamAnasya saMlakSyanM te viceSTitam
do thou observe well his act while accomplishing it.

03073004a na cAsya pratibandhena deyo 'gnir api bhAmini
And, O kezinI, whenever he may ask water or fire, with the view of offering him obstruction,

03073004c yAcate na jalanM deyaM samyag atvaramANayA
thou shalt be in no hurry to give it.

03073005a etat sarvaM samIkSya tvaJM caritamM me nivedaya
And marking everything about his behaviour, come thou and tell me.

03073005c yac cAnyad api pazyethAs tac cAkhyeyanM tvayA mama
And whatever human or super-human thou seest in bAhuka, together with anything else, should all be reported unto me.'

03073006a damayantyaivam uktA sA jagAmAthAzu kezinI
And thus addressed by Damayanti, kezinI went away,

03073006c nizAmya ca hayajJasya liGgAni punar Agamat
and having marked the conduct of that person versed in horse-lore,

03073007a sA tat sarvaM yathAvRttanM damayantyai nyavedayat
she came back and related unto Damayanti all that had happened,

03073007c nimittaM yat tadA dRSTamM bAhuke divyamAnuSam
indeed, everything of human and superhuman that she had witnessed in bAhuka.

03073008 keziny uvAca
And kezinI said,

03073008a dRDhaM zucyupacAro 'sau na mayA mAnuSaH kva cit
'O Damayanti, a person of such control over the elements

03073008c dRSTapUrvazH zruto vApi damayanti tathAvidhaH
I have never before seen or heard of.

03073009a hrasvam AsAdya saJMcAranM nAsau vinamate kva cit
Whenever he cometh to low passage, he never stoopeth down,

03073009c tanM tu dRSTvA yathAsaGgam utsarpati yathAsukham
but seeing him, the passage itself groweth in height so that he may pass through it easily.

03073009e saGMkaTe 'py asya sumahad vivaraJM jAyate 'dhikam
And at his approach, impassable narrow holes open wide.

03073010a RtuparNasya cArthAya bhojanIyam anekazaH

03073010c preSitanM tatra rAjJA ca mAMsaM subahu pAzavam
King bhIma had sent various kinds of meat--of diverse animals, for RtuparNa's food.

03073011a tasya prakSAlanArthAya kumbhas tatropakalpitaH
And many vessels had been placed there for washing the meat.

03073011c sa tenAvekSitaH kumbhaH pUrNa evAbhavat tadA
And as he looked upon them, those vessels became filled (with water).

03073012a tataH prakSAlanaM kRtvA samadhizritya bAhukaH
And having washed the meat, as he set himself to cook,

03073012c tRNamuSTiM samAdAya AvidhyainaM samAdadhat
he took up a handful of grass and held it in the sun,

03073013a atha prajvalitas tatra sahasA havyavAhanaH
when fire blazed up all on a sudden.

03073013c tad adbhutatamanM dRSTvA vismitAham ihAgatA
Beholding this marvel, I have come hither amazed.

03073014a anyac ca tasmin sumahad AzcaryaM lakSitamM mayA
Further, I have witnessed in him another great wonder.

03073014c yad agnim api saMspRzya naiva dahyaty asau zubhe
O beauteous one, he touched fire and was not burnt.

03073015a chandena codakanM tasya vahaty AvarjitanM drutam
And at his will, water falling floweth in a stream.

03073015c atIva cAnyat sumahad AzcaryanM dRSTavaty aham
And, I have witnessed another greater wonder still.

03073016a yat sa puSpANy upAdAya hastAbhyAmM mamRde zanaiH
He took up some flowers, began to press them slowly with his hands.

03073016c mRdyamAnAni pANibhyAnM tena puSpANi tAny atha
And pressed by his hand, the flowers did not lose their original forms,

03073017a bhUya eva sugandhIni hRSitAni bhavanti ca
but, on the contrary, became gayer and more odorous than before.

03073017c etAny adbhutakalpAni dRSTvAhanM drutam AgatA
Having beheld wonderful things I have come hither with speed.''

03073018 bRhadazva uvAca
'bRhadazva continued,

03073018a damayantI tu tac chrutvA puNyazlokasya ceSTitam
'Hearing of these acts of the virtuous nala,

03073018c amanyata nalamM prAptaGM karmaceSTAbhisUcitam
and discovering him from his behaviour, Damayanti considered him as already recovered.

03073019a sA zaGkamAnA bhartAranM nalamM bAhukarUpiNam
And from these indications suspecting that bAhuka was her husband,

03073019c kezinIM zlakSNayA vAcA rudatI punar abravIt
Damayanti once more weepingly addressed kezinI in soft words, saying,

03073020a punar gaccha pramattasya bAhukasyopasaMskRtam
'O beauteous one, go thou once more,

03073020c mahAnasAc chRtamM mAMsaM samAdAyaihi bhAmini
and bring from the kitchen without bAhuka's knowledge some meat that hath been boiled and dressed (by him).'

03073021a sA gatvA bAhuke vyagre tan mAMsam apakRSya ca
Thus commanded, kezinI, ever bent on doing what was agreeable to Damayanti, went to bAhuka,

03073021c atyuSNam eva tvaritA tatkSaNamM priyakAriNI
and taking some hot meat came back without loss of time.

03073021e damayantyai tataH prAdAt kezinI kurunandana
And kezinI gave that meat, O son of the kuru race, unto Damayanti.

03073022a socitA nalasiddhasya mAMsasya bahuzaH purA
And Damayanti who had formerly often partaken of meat dressed by nala,

03073022c prAzya matvA nalaM sUdamM prAkrozad bhRzaduHkhitA
tasted the meat that was brought by her hand-maid. And she thereupon decided bAhuka to be nala and wept aloud in grief of heart.

03073023a vaiklavyaJM ca paraGM gatvA prakSAlya ca mukhanM tataH
And, O bharata, overwhelmed with grief, and washing her face,

03073023c mithunamM preSayAmAsa kezinyA saha bhArata
she sent her two children with kezinI.

03073024a indrasenAM saha bhrAtrA samabhijJAya bAhukaH
And bAhuka, who was the king in disguise, recognising Indrasena with her brother,

03073024c abhidrutya tato rAjA pariSvajyAGkam Anayat
advanced hastily, and embracing them, took them up on his lap.

03073025a bAhukas tu samAsAdya sutau surasutopamau
And taking up his children like unto the children of the celestials,

03073025c bhRzanM duHkhaparItAtmA sasvaraM praruroda ha
he began to weep aloud in sonorous accents, his heart oppressed with great sorrow.

03073026a naiSadho darzayitvA tu vikAram asakRt tadA
And after having repeatedly betrayed his agitation, Naishadha suddenly

03073026c utsRjya sahasA putrau kezinIm idam abravIt
left children, and addressed kezinI, saying,

03073027a idaM susadRzamM bhadre mithunamM mama putrayoH
'O fair damsel, these twins are very like my own children.

03073027c tato dRSTvaiva sahasA bASpam utsRSTavAn aham
Beholding them unexpectedly, I shed tears.

03073028a bahuzasH samMpatantInM tvAJM janazH zaGketa doSataH
If thou comest to me frequently people may think evil,

03073028c vayaJM ca dezAtithayo gaccha bhadre namo 'stu te
for we are guests from another land. Therefore. O blessed one, go at thy ease.''
