'vaizaMpAyana said,

04062001a tato vijitya saGMgrAme kurUn govRSabhekSaNaH
'Having vanquished the kurus in battle, that one with eyes like those of a bull

04062001c samAnayAmAsa tadA virATasya dhanamM mahat
brought back that profuse cattle wealth of virATa.

04062002a gateSu ca prabhagneSu dhArtarASTreSu sarvazaH
And while the sons of dhRtarASTra, after their rout, were going away,

04062002c vanAn niSkramya gahanAd bahavaH kurusainikAH
a large number of Kuru-soldiers issuing out of the deep forest

04062003a bhayAt sanMtrastamanasasH samAjagmus tatas tataH
appeared with slow steps before pArtha, their hearts afflicted with fear.

04062003c muktakezA vyadRzyanta sthitAH prAJjalayas tadA
And they stood before him with joined palms and with hair dishevelled.

04062004a kSutpipAsAparizrAntA videzasthA vicetasaH
And fatigued with hunger and thirst, arrived in a foreign land, insensible with terror,

04062004c UcuH praNamya saMbhrAntAH pArtha kiM karavAma te
and confused in mind, they all bowed down unto the son of pRthA and said,--We are thy slaves.'

04062005 arjuna uvAca
'arjuna said,

04062005a svasti vrajata bhadraM vo na bhetavyaGM kathaJM cana
'Welcome, blessed be ye. Go ye away. Ye have no cause of fear.

04062005c nAham ArtAJ jighAMsAmi bhRzam AzvAsayAmi vaH
I will not take the lives of them that are afflicted. Ye have my assurance of protection.

04062006 vaizamMpAyana uvAca
'vaizaMpAyana continued,

04062006a tasya tAm abhayAM vAcaM zrutvA yodhAsH samAgatAH
'Hearing these words of assurance, the assembled warriors

04062006c AyuHkIrtiyazodAbhis tam Azirbhir anandayan
greeted him with benedictions in praise of his achievements and fame and wishing him long life.

04062006aa tato 'rjunanM nAgam iva prabhinnam
When arjuna, like an elephant with rent temples,

04062006ab utsRjya zatrUn vinivartamAnam
after expelling the foes turned back

04062006ac virATarASTrAbhimukhamM prayAntam
and was going towards the kingdom of virATa,

04062006ad nAzaknuvaMs taGM kuravo 'bhiyAtum
the kurus were unable to confront him.

04062006ba tatasH sa tan megham ivApatantam
And after routing, like a violent wind scattering the clouds,

04062006bb vidravya pArthaH kurumeghasainyam
the whole army of the kurus, pArtha,

04062006bc matsyasya putranM dviSatAnM nihantA
that slayer of foes,

04062006bd vaco 'bravIt samMparirabhya bhUyaH
regardfully addressing the prince of matsya, said,

04062006ca pitusH sakAze tava tAta sarve

04062006cb vasanti pArthA viditanM tavaiva
'It is known to thee alone, O child, that the sons of pRthA are all living with thy father.

04062006cc tAn mA prazaMser nagaramM pravizya
Do not eulogise them upon entering the city,

04062006cd bhItaH praNazyed dhi sa matsyarAjaH
for then the king of the matsyas may hide himself in fear.

04062006da mayA jitA sA dhvajinI kurUNAm
'By me hath the army of the kurus been vanquished,

04062006db mayA ca gAvo vijitA dviSadbhyaH
and by me have the kine been recovered from the foe!'

04062006dc pitusH sakAzanM nagaramM pravizya
-- enter the city, and proclaim that;

04062006dd tvam AtmanaH karma kRtaM bravIhi
say in the presence of thy father that the deed is thy own.

04062006e uttara uvAca
'Uttara said,

04062006ea yat te kRtaGM karma na pAraNIyam
'The feat thou hast achieved

04062006eb tat karma kartumM mama nAsti zaktiH
is beyond my power. I do not possess the ability to achieve it.

04062006ec na tvAmM pravakSyAmi pitusH sakAze
I shall not, however, discover thee to my father,

04062006ed yAvan na mAM vakSyasi savyasAcin
until you tell me so, O savyasAcin.'

04062006f vaizampAyana uvAca
'vaizaMpAyana continued,

04062006fa sa zatrusenAm avajitya jiSNuH
'jiSNu, having vanquished the hostile army

04062006fb Acchidya sarvaJM ca dhanaGM kurubhyaH
and wrested the whole of the cattle wealth from the kurus,

04062006fc zmazAnam Agatya punazH zamInM tAm
returned again to the cemetery and having approached the same Sami tree

04062006fd abhyetya tasthau zaravikSatAGgaH
stood there with body mangled by the arrows of the enemy.

04062006ga tatasH sa vahnipratimo mahAkapiH
Then that terrible monkey blazing like fire
ascended into the sky with those other creatures in the flag-staff.
And the illusion created (by Viswakarma) melted away
and Uttara's own banner bearing the device of a lion was set up on the car again.
