05012003c parasya patnI sA devI prasIdasva surezvara That goddess is another person's wife. Be pacified, O lord of gods!
05012004a nivartaya manaH pApAt paradArAbhimarzanAt Turn back thy inclination from the sin of outraging another's wife.
05012004c devarAjo 'si bhadranM te prajA dharmeNa pAlaya Thou art the king of gods, prosperity to thee! Protect thy subjects in all righteousness!'
05012005a evam ukto na jagrAha tad vacaH kAmamohitaH So addressed, he heeded not the saying rendered senseless by lust.

05012007a bahUni ca nRzaMsAni kRtAnIndreNa vai purA Many were the deeds of inhumanity, of unrighteousness, of deceit, committed by indra in former times.
05012007c vaidharmyANy upadhAz caiva sa vaH kiM na nivAritaH Why did ye not prevent him?
05012008a upatiSThatu mAnM devI etad asyA hitamM param Let the goddess do my pleasure; that would be her permanent good.
05012008c yuSmAkaJM ca sadA devAzH zivam evamM bhaviSyati And so the same will ever more rebound to your safety, ye gods!'

05012009a indrANIm AnayiSyAmo yathecchasi divaspate 'We shall bring to thee the queen of indra even as thou hast laid the command, 'O lord of heaven!

05012010a ity uktvA te tadA devA RSibhisH saha bhArata 'Thus having spoken to him, the gods with the saint
05012010c jagmur bRhaspatiM vaktum indrANIJM cAzubhaM vacaH went to inform bRhaspati and the queen of indra of the said news.
05012011a jAnImazH zaraNamM prAptam indrANInM tava vezmani And they said, 'We know, O foremost of brAhmaNas, that the queen of indra hath betaken herself to thy house, for protection,
05012011c dattAbhayAJM ca viprendra tvayA devarSisattama and that thou hast promised her protection, O best of divine saints!
05012012a te tvAnM devAsH sagandharvA RSayaz ca mahAdyute But we, the gods and gandharvas and saints,
05012012c prasAdayanti cendrANI nahuSAya pradIyatAm beseech thee, O thou of great lustre, to give up the queen of indra to Nahusha.
05012013a indrAd viziSTo nahuSo devarAjo mahAdyutiH Nahusha, the king of gods, of great effulgence, is superior to indra.
05012013c vRNotv iyaM varArohA bhartRtve varavarNinI Let her, that lady of choice figure and complexion, choose him as her husband!'
05012014a evam ukte tu sA devI bASpam utsRjya sasvaram Thus addressed, the goddess gave vent to tears; and sobbing audibly,

05012016a zaraNAgatAnM na tyajeyam indrANi mama nizcitam 'My resolution is this, I shall not abandon one that hath sought my protection.
05012016c dharmajJAnM dharmazIlAJM ca na tyaje tvAm anindite O thou of unblamable life, I shall not abandon thee, virtuous as thou art and of a truthful disposition!

05012017c zrutadharmA satyazIlo jAnan dharmAnuzAsanam knowing what righteousness is, having a regard for truth, and aware also of the precepts of virtue.

05012024a atha devAs tam evAhur gurum aGgirasAM varam 'Then the gods and the gandharvas said these words to the preceptor of the gods,
05012024c kathaM sunItanM tu bhaven mantrayasva bRhaspate 'O bRhaspati, deliberate upon something that may be conformable to sound policy!'
05012025 bRhaspatir uvAca bRhaspati said,
05012025a nahuSaM yAcatAnM devI kiJM cit kAlAntaraM zubhA 'Let this goddess of auspicious looks ask for time from Nahusha in order to make up her mind to his proposal.
05012025c indrANIhitam etad dhi tathAsmAkamM bhaviSyati This will be for the good of indra's queen, and of us as well.
05012026a bahuvighnakaraH kAlaH kAlaH kAlaM nayiSyati Time, ye gods, may give rise to many impediments. Time will send time onward.
05012026c darpito balavAMz cApi nahuSo varasaMzrayAt Nahusha is proud and powerful by virtue of the boon granted to him!'
05012027 zalya uvAca 'zalya continued,
05012027a tatas tena tathokte tu prItA devAs tam abruvan 'bRhaspati having spoken so, the gods, delighted then said,
05012027c brahman sAdhv idam uktanM te hitaM sarvadivaukasAm 'Well hast thou said, O brAhmaNa. This is for the good of all the gods.
05012027e evam etad dvijazreSTha devI ceyamM prasAdyatAm It is no doubt so. Only, let this goddess be propitiated.'
05012028a tatasH samastA indrANInM devAsH sAgnipurogamAH Then the assembled gods led by agni,
05012028c Ucur vacanam avyagrA lokAnAM hitakAmyayA with a view to the welfare of all the worlds, spoke to indra's queen in a quiet way.
05012029a tvayA jagad idaM sarvanM dhRtaM sthAvarajaGgamam And the gods said, 'Thou art supporting the whole universe of things mobile and immobile.
05012029c ekapatny asi satyA ca gacchasva nahuSamM prati Thou art chaste and true: go thou to Nahusha.
05012030a kSipranM tvAm abhikAmaz ca vinaziSyati pArthivaH That vicious being, lustful after thee, will shortly fall:
05012030c nahuSo devi zakraz ca suraizvaryam avApsyati and indra, O goddess, will get the sovereignty of the gods!'
05012031a evaM vinizcayaGM kRtvA indrANI kAryasiddhaye Ascertaining this to be the result of that deliberation, indra's queen, for attaining her end,
05012031c abhyagacchata savrIDA nahuSaGM ghoradarzanam went bashfully to Nahusha of awful mien.
05012032a dRSTvA tAnM nahuSaz cApi vayorUpasamanvitAm The vicious Nahusha also, rendered senseless by lust, saw how youthful and lovely she was,
05012032c samahRSyata duSTAtmA kAmopahatacetanaH and became highly pleased.'
