06039001a ye zAstravidhim utsRjya yajante zraddhayAnvitAH Those who abandoning the ordinance of the scriptures, endued with faith, perform sacrifices
06039001c teSAnM niSThA tu kA kRSNa sattvam Aho rajas tamaH What is their state, O kRSNa? It is one of Goodness, or Passion, or Darkness?'
06039002 zrIbhagavAn uvAca 'The Holy One said,
06039002a trividhA bhavati zraddhA dehinAM sA svabhAvajA 'The faith of embodied (creatures) is of three kinds. It is (also) born of their (individual) natures.
06039002c sAttvikI rAjasI caiva tAmasI ceti tAM zRNu It is good, passionate, and dark. Hear now these.
06039003a sattvAnurUpA sarvasya zraddhA bhavati bhArata The faith of one, O bharata, is conformable to his own nature.
06039003c zraddhAmayo 'yamM puruSo yo yacchraddhasH sa eva saH A being here is full of faith; and whatever is one's faith, one is even that.
06039004a yajante sAttvikA devAn yakSarakSAMsi rAjasAH They that are of the quality of goodness worship the gods; they that are of the quality of passion (worship) the yakSas and the rAkSasas;
06039004c pretAn bhUtagaNAMz cAnye yajante tAmasA janAH other people that are of the quality of darkness worship departed spirits and hosts of Bhutas.
06039005a azAstravihitaGM ghoranM tapyante ye tapo janAH Those people who practise severe ascetic austerities not ordained by the scriptures,
06039005c dambhAhaGMkArasaMyuktAH kAmarAgabalAnvitAH are given up to hypocrisy and pride, and endued with desire, attachment, and violence,
06039006c mAJM caivAntazHzarIrasthanM tAn viddhy AsuranizcayAn --those persons possessed of no discernment, torturing the groups of organs in (their) bodies and Me also seated within (those) bodies,--should be known to be of demoniac resolves.
06039007a AhAras tv api sarvasya trividho bhavati priyaH
06039008c rasyAsH snigdhAsH sthirA hRdyA AhArAsH sAttvikapriyAH Food which is dear to all is of three kinds. Sacrifice, penance, and gifts are likewise (of three kinds). Listen to their distinctions as follows.
06039018a satkAramAnapUjArthanM tapo dambhena caiva yat
06039018c kriyate tad iha proktaM rAjasaJM calam adhruvam
06039019a mUDhagrAheNAtmano yat pIDayA kriyate tapaH The penance which is done by a foolish notion causing pain to oneself
06039019c parasyotsAdanArthaM vA tat tAmasam udAhRtam or in order to hurt others is tamasic.
06039020a dAtavyam iti yad dAnanM dIyate 'nupakAriNe That gift which is given because it ought to be given, to one who cannot return any service for it,
06039020c deze kAle ca pAtre ca tad dAnaM sAttvikaM smRtam in a proper time, and to a proper person, is said to be of the quality of goodness.
06039021a yat tu pratyupakArArthamM phalam uddizya vA punaH
06039021c dIyate ca parikliSTanM tad dAnaM rAjasaM smRtam That, however, which is given reluctantly, for return of services (past or expected), or even with an eye to fruit,--that gift is said to be of the quality of passion.
06039022a adezakAle yad dAnam apAtrebhyaz ca dIyate In an unfit place and at an unfit time, the gift that is made to an unworthy receiver,
06039022c asatkRtam avajJAtanM tat tAmasam udAhRtam without respect, and with contempt, is said to be of the quality of darkness.
06039023a onM tat sad iti nirdezo brahmaNas trividhasH smRtaH OM, TAT, SAT, this is said to be the three-fold designation of brahmA.
06039023c brAhmaNAs tena vedAz ca yajJAz ca vihitAH purA By that (brahmA), the brAhmaNas and the Vedas, and the Sacrifices, were ordained of old.
06039024c pravartante vidhAnoktAsH satatamM brahmavAdinAm Therefore, uttering the syllable OM, the sacrifices, gifts, and penances,
06039024a tasmAd om ity udAhRtya yajJadAnatapaHkriyAH prescribed by the ordinance, of all utterers of brahmA begin.
06039025a tad ity anabhisanMdhAya phalaM yajJatapaHkriyAH Uttering TAT, the various rites of sacrifice, penance,
06039025c dAnakriyAz ca vividhAH kriyante mokSakAGkSibhiH and gifts, without expectation of fruit, are performed by those that are desirous of deliverance.
06039026a sadbhAve sAdhubhAve ca sad ity etat prayujyate SAT is employed to denote existence and goodness.
06039026c prazaste karmaNi tathA sacchabdaH pArtha yujyate Likewise, O son of pRthA, the word sat is used in any auspicious act.
06039027a yajJe tapasi dAne ca sthitisH sad iti cocyate Constancy in sacrifices, in penances and in gifts, is also called SAT,
06039027c karma caiva tadarthIyaM sad ity evAbhidhIyate and an act, too, for the sake of That is called sat.
06039028a azraddhayA hutanM dattanM tapas taptaGM kRtaJM ca yat Whatever oblation is offered (to the fire), whatever is given away, whatever penance is performed, whatever is done, without faith,
06039028c asad ity ucyate pArtha na ca tat pretya no iha is, O son of pRthA, said to be the opposite of sat; and that is nought both here and hereafter.
