The "fattening" process happens in the /liT and in a couple other places. The root रोओत् is "strengthened" before a vowel just enough to create a heavy vowel. Let's see some examples with the perfect, where a अ is added after the root.
If after adding a अ we already get a heavy syllable, no fattening is needed:
jIv jijIva जीव्जिजीव
prach papraccha प्रछ्पप्रच्छ with c च् by checa
bandh babandha बन्ध्बबन्ध
Otherwise, if guNa गुण makes a heavy syllable, we strengthen root to /guNa —
kSip cikSepa क्षिप्चिक्षेप
tud tutoda तुद्तुतोद
dRz dadarza दृश्ददर्श
But if guNa गुण would fail to produce a heavy syllable, as in nI + a अ → naya, then we strengthen to /vRddhi —
nI ninAya नी निनाय
yaj यज् **iyAja इयाज
dru dudrAva द्रु दुद्राव
tRR tatAra तॄ ततार
tyaj tatyAja त्यज्तत्याज
