/rai- turns into rA- राॱ before consonant /sup.
The base rai- रैॱ f means "wealth" or "an item of wealth". It is said to be the only base ending in ai ऐ.
Before a consonant /sup it turns into rA रा by this sUtra —
/rai- + /su → rAH राः " s wealth"
/rai- + /sup'
→ rAsu रासु "in items of wealth"
rAbhyAm राभ्याम्
rAbhiH राभिः
rAbhyaH राभ्यः
Before vowel /sup we get rAy- राय् by ecoyavAyAvaH —
/rai- + /au → !**rAyau रायौ
/rai- + /am → !**rAyam रायम्
/rai- + /Am → !**rAyAm रायाम्
/rai- + /jas OR /zas → !**rAyaH रायः
Why do we say before a /sup?
The /rai- stays unchanged before a /taddhita —
/rai- + /tva + /su → raitvam रैत्वम् "wealthiness" (wealth status) / "wealthness" (state of being wealth)
When /rai- is neuter in a genderbender, it becomes ri रि —
ati-rai- अतिॱरैॱ n + /su OR /am → **atiri अतिरि
as in
atiri kulam अतिरि कुलम् "super-rich family".
If /rai- is the only nounbase ending in ai ऐ, what's the use of the r र् in this sUtra? It might have been Ayohali आयोहलि and it would work the same.
This r र् tells us that other /pANini did not think that /rai- was the only nounbase ending in ai ऐ, or he thought that some might be added in the future. In either case, this rule won't apply to the other ai ऐ-enders —
jedair DAmaras saH जेदैर्डामरः सः "he's a Jedai knight"
sAmudrikaF papair asmi सामुद्रिक⩆ पपैरस्मि "I'm Papai the sailor"
