You cheater! The vA वा in the sUtra means "optionally". No way it can mean "compulsorily". You mistranslated!

I did, yes. On purpose.

Why?

I always teach my students that the change is compulsory. Then I make them practice the change until they do it automatically without thinking, which takes a couple months. After that, I say "sorry, I lied" and told them that /pANini allows the pronunciation guru गुरु + hiss + sAkSAt साक्षात् but that hardly anyone uses it these days.

Lying to your students is hardly professional, not to mention impious when the subject is part of the vedAnta वेदान्त.

Before I started to do this, my students used to conclude that, since the change is optional, they didn't need to get used to it. So they ended up singing "guruHU sAkSAt". That's not PC. But gurussAkSAt is PC.
