ekavacanaM sambuddhiH

एकवचनं सम्बुद्धिः ONPANINI 23049

The singular /Amantrita is called /sambuddhi.

In other words —

The /sambuddhi is the /su that is added to the name of whomever we address or call.

Example. When meaning "the ship is coming", we add the normal /su to the base /nau-

/nau- + normal /sunau नौ + s स् → **naus नौस्

as in

Agacchati nauH आगच्छति नौः "the ship is coming"

But when we talk to a ship, calling it "ship", we add the /sambuddhi /su instead —

/nau- + /sambuddhi /sunau नौ + s स् → **naus नौस्

as in

naur Agaccha नौरागच्छ "hey ship, come here!"

What does it matter if a /su is called /sambuddhi or not?

The /su that is called /sambuddhi triggers some extra grammar rules. So with a /su that is not /sambuddhi

**kRSNa- कृष्णॱ + normal /su!**kRSNas कृष्णस्

as in

Agacchati kRSnaH आगच्छति कृष्नः "Krishna is coming"

But with a /sambuddhi

**kRSNa- कृष्णॱ + /sambuddhi /su
kRSNa- कृष्णॱ + s स्
kRSNa- कृष्णॱ + /lopa, by eGhrasvAtsamb...
!**kRSNa कृष्ण "hey kRSNa कृष्ण"

As in —

Agaccha kRSna आगच्छ कृष्न "hey Krishna, come here!"
