Why do you bother to include "and /as" in your translation? That "and /as" just tells us that the /Atmanepada form of **asmi अस्मि is "ahe अहे", but **asmi अस्मि is never ever used in the /Atmanepada, so the very existence of that ahe अहे is at best doubtful.
According to nyAsa न्यास, there is a verb /vi + /ati + /as that is /AtmanepadI and means "excel, surpass, be beyond, be in the proper place of someone else", and its /as loses the a अ. By this rule it loses the s स् as well. This allows —
