I didn't understand how **patati पतति turns into **patantam पतन्तम् in the example in page laTazzatRz....
The word **patati पतति is made like this —
pat पत् + /laT → pat पत् + /tip → pat पत् + /zap + /tip → **patati पतति
So the /laT affix in **patati पतति is /tip. Rule laTazzatRz... allows us to replace the /tip in **patati पतति with /zatR, and then make that /zatR nounbase link to **zakunim शकुनिम्.
To do that, we start with the **patati पतति, then roll it back into pat पत् + /tip, then replace the /tip with /zatR, like this —
**patati पतति "flies"
→ pat पत् + /tip
→ pat पत् + /laT
→ pat पत् + /zatR by laTazzatRz...
→ **patat- पतत् mfn "that flies"
After that, we make that **patat- पतत् nounbase linkto **zakunim शकुनिम्.
The **patat- पतत् must be m here, if the **zakunim शकुनिम् is m .
Then we add /am after **patat- पतत् m , because **zakunim शकुनिम् has /am —
**patat- पतत् mfn + /am
→ **patat- पतत् m + /am
→ **patantam पतन्तम् "that flies"
So we say —
zakunim patantam शकुनिं पतन्तम् "bird that flies"
or
patantaM zakunim पतन्तं शकुनिम् "bird that flies".
