Verbs and fakeverbs are said to show nothing when they neither show the doer nor show the object. Only objectless verbs can do this, because sUtra laHkarmaNic... teaches that when a transitive root does not show the doer, it must show the object.

Examples —

Asyate आस्यते "sit happens", "sitting is taking place"

When the sentence expresses the doer of such a verb, it must take third ending by kartRkaraN....

Asyate mayA आस्यते मया "I am sitting"

The grammar jargon word for "when it shows nothing" is /bhAve, that can also be translated as "when it means the action" or "when it means a state". the word is used in that sense in sUtras —

bhAvakarmaNoH

laHkarmaNic...

ciNbhAvakarm...

and others.
