/luk / लुक्

When I say luk a thing, I mean erase it.

According to pratyayasyal..., /luk is a particular kind of affix-disappearance.

When we delete something we have to remember if it was replaced with /luk, /lopa or something else. As for instance, rule luktaddhital... will only work when a /taddhita has been deleted by /luk. It will not work when a /taddhita is deleted some other way.

By rule nalumatAGg..., a /luk deletion is stronger than an ordinary lopa लोप. It not just deletes the letters of the affix, it also deletes its side effects on the stem.

So when we add rAjan- राजन् + /am we get **rAjAnam राजानम्, with lengthened jA जा. But if afterwards the /am is luked (say by svamornapuMs... or supodhAtupr...), we roll back to rAjan राजन्.
