Replace /sup with /luk before a verbmaking suffix, before a /taddhita, and when ibc.
Denominative verbs, /taddhita derivatives and compounds are all built by adding things after a noun. This sUtra tells us that the noun loses its /sup (uos).
Example with a denominative verb (a verb made from a noun):
putram icchati पुत्रमिच्छति → **putrIyati पुत्रीयति
Example with the taddhita affix /iJ, that means "son" —
dazarathasya sutaH दशरथस्य सुतः → dazarathasya दशरथस्य + /iJ → **dAzarathi- दाशरथिॱ
Example ibc:
rAjJaH puruSaH राज्ञः पुरुषः → **rAjapuruSas राजपुरुषस्
The literal translation of the sUtra is "replace a /sup wuith /luk when it is inside a root or a nounbase." It is inside a root when forming a denominative, and inside a nounbase when adding a /taddhita (dazarathasya दशरथस्य is a nounbase when before /iJ) or forming a compound (rajJaH puruSa- रज्ञः पुरुषॱ is a nounbase).
